Across the street from where my wife and I are currently living is a lake. I love to look out the big picture window in the living room and enjoy its blueness on a sunny day, with trees and green grass along its edge.
Now, is it wrong for me to stand there and gaze at the lake, simply for the pleasure of enjoying its beauty? No! It is not self-centred; I am honouring that lake by delighting in it.
I have heard it said that it is self-centred to seek God in His Word simply for the pleasure of enjoying Him. But no, this is not self-centred; we are honouring Him by delighting in Him!
We are called, after all, to delight ourselves in the Lord (Psalm 37:4). And we are promised that, if we do this, God will give us the desires of our heart. But this is profoundly not self-centred – it is God-centred.
Why not live in a God-centred way today by praying and reading the Bible, and by seeking to have a taste of the “fullness of joy” that is in His presence? Nothing could honour God more.
